Pager Explosions in Lebanon Kill Nine and Injure 2,800

Various pagers detonated in different locations in Lebanon on Tuesday, Sep. 17, killing nine individuals and injuring 2,800 people, according to the country's health ministry.

Two hundred people are in critical condition, according to the authorities. The pager explosions were reported in southern Beirut and Bekaa Valley in the eastern region of the country. An explosion was also reported inside a car in Damascus by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati talked on a phone call where the Jordanian FM provided medical assistance to Lebanon after the attacks.

Among the nine individuals killed, one of them was the son of Hezbollah MP Ali Ammar. Mahdi Ammar is the second son of a Hezbollah MP who has died after MP Mohammad Raad’s son Abbas Raad.

Lebanon's foreign ministry has condemned the attacks and held Israel responsible for them. The ministry is preparing to submit a complaint to the UN Security Council.

Schools, universities, and technical institutions will be closed in Lebanon on Wednesday, Sep. 18 for mourning.
