A Cautionary Reminder
In an official statement, the embassy urged Filipinos in Kuwait to respect all laws and regulations of the Gulf state, emphasizing that violations could lead to serious legal consequences.
"The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait calls on members of the Filipino community to respect and comply with all laws and regulations of Kuwait, including the prohibition of unauthorized gatherings," the advisory stated in Filipino.
The embassy stressed that this measure is for the safety and well-being of Filipinos living and working in Kuwait and to prevent any legal complications that may arise from non-compliance.
The Qatar Incident
The advisory follows the detention of 17 Filipinos in Qatar after they allegedly participated in a gathering in support of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte on March 28. Qatar classified the event as an unauthorized political rally, leading to the arrest of those involved.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has since confirmed that Qatar has provisionally released the detained Filipinos, although they remain under investigation and are prohibited from leaving the country until the case is resolved.
Philippine Government’s Stand
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose De Vega clarified that the Philippine government had no role in the arrests. He also reassured the Filipino community that Philippine embassies do not report on their citizens to local authorities.
The incident has sparked discussions among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) about the importance of understanding and respecting the laws of host countries. With millions of Filipinos working across the Middle East, embassies continue to remind them of their rights and responsibilities to ensure their safety and legal protection.
