Kuwait Set to Begin First Phase of Railway Project

Kuwait is officially kicking off its long-awaited railway project today, with the Minister of Public Works, Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan, set to sign the first major contract. According to sources familiar with the plan, the deal will be signed with a specialized international Turkish company, marking the start of the Kuwait Railway Project’s first phase.

What the First Phase Includes

This initial contract covers the full study, detailed design, and preparation of tender documents for the foundational phase of the railway. It’s a major step forward - from years of planning to actual execution.

The first phase will last 12 months and focus on preparing all the technical documentation required to begin the tender process for construction.

Connecting Kuwait to Saudi Arabia

Once completed, the proposed railway line will stretch 111 kilometers, connecting Kuwait to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A major passenger station will also be built in the Shadadiya area on a massive two million square meter plot.

Part of the Bigger Gulf Railway Link Project

Kuwait will serve as the northern starting point for the larger Gulf Railway Link project which is an ambitious network designed to eventually connect all GCC countries by rail. The entire Kuwait section is expected to be completed by 2030 and will represent about 5% of the total Gulf railway network.

Three Key Phases to Completion

  • Appointing an international consultant
  • Carrying out qualification and bidding
  • Launching full-scale construction

A Core Part of Vision 2035
