Kuwait Sees Rise in Expats: Indians & Egyptians Top List

Recent statistics show a 2.9% increase in expatriates working in Kuwait's government and private sectors, with Indian nationals topping the list. According to Al Qabas, the number of expatriate workers rose from 1.64 million in June 2023 to 1.68 million last June, making up a significant 78.9% of Kuwait's total workforce.

Who’s Working in Kuwait?

As of the end of June, the breakdown of major nationalities in the Kuwaiti labor market reveals that Indians lead with 537,430 workers, followed closely by Egyptians, who number 474,000. This demographic shift highlights the important role expatriates play in the economy.

In the public sector, around 474,000 people are employed, with Kuwaitis comprising 79.6% of this group. Meanwhile, in the private sector, the total workforce stands at approximately 1.7 million, where only 4.4% are Kuwaitis.

Workforce Overview

Overall, the total number of workers in Kuwait's government and private sectors, excluding family sector employment, has surpassed the 2.1 million mark, according to the Central Statistical Bureau. Over the past year, there has been an increase of about 52,000 workers in the Kuwaiti labor market.

Interestingly, the number of Kuwaiti workers also saw a rise, increasing from 447,064 in June 2023 to 451,595 last June. This means that Kuwaitis now account for 21.1% of the total workforce in the country.

Kuwait’s Population and Expatriate Policies

Kuwait's population stands at around 4.9 million, with foreigners making up a significant 3.3 million of that total. In recent years, the Kuwaiti government has made efforts to create job opportunities for its citizens, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign labor and address demographic imbalances.
