Tragic Gas Explosion in Iranian Coal Mine Claims 51 Lives

A deadly methane gas explosion in Iran's South Khorasan Province coal mine has left at least 51 people dead and 20 others injured, according to state media reports.

The incident occurred on Sunday in blocks B and C of the Madanjoo company's coal mine, which is a major supplier in the region, providing approximately 76% of the country's coal. Governor Ali Akbar Rahimi confirmed that the explosion was caused by a buildup of methane gas.

Rescue operations in block B have concluded, resulting in the tragic loss of 30 lives out of the 47 workers present at the time. Seventeen others were injured. Efforts are currently underway to rescue workers from block C, where high methane levels pose significant dangers, and operations are expected to take several hours.

At the time of the explosion, 69 workers were reported to be in the affected blocks. The Iranian Red Crescent noted that 24 individuals remain unaccounted for, with 17 injured individuals being transported to local hospitals.

The explosion occurred around 9:00 p.m. local time on Saturday. President Masoud Pezeshkian extended condolences to the victims' families, assuring that government officials would closely monitor the situation and ensure necessary support.
