Asa Tibs, or Ethiopian fried fish, is a well-known street food in Ethiopia liberally seasoned with berbere that is served with lime and an extra sprinkle of berbere.

Asa Tibs

1kg monkfish or your favorite white flesh fish
1 1/2 tablespoons berbere
salt to taste
oil for frying
1 thinly sliced onion
2 finely chopped garlic cloves
3 finely chopped small chiles
juice of 1 lime
  • Method & Directions

  1. Marinate the fish

    Sprinkle berbere over fish and leave it for an hour to marinate.
  2. Fry the fish

    In a large skillet, heat enough oil, then add fish pieces and fry until golden on all sides and cooked through. Remove the fish and sprinkle with a little salt.
  3. Caramelize the onion

    Add onions in the same skillet and cook caramelized. Add garlic and chiles, and cook for 1 more minute.
  4. Add the fish again

    Return the fish to the skillet, add lime juice, and toss to combine.
  5. Serve

    Serve with lime and an extra garnish of more berbere.
