Sweet Potato Crème Brûlée is a unique and indulgent dessert perfect for Ramadan or a satisfying Suhoor meal. This dish combines the creamy richness of traditional crème brûlée with the natural sweetness of roasted sweet potatoes. In addition, it is effortless to make and does not require a lot of cleaning. The potatoes will act as your dish containing rich creamy custard and then topped with a caramelized sugar crust for that signature crunch. Serve it warm for a luscious treat that provides energy and sweetness, making it a delightful addition to your Ramadan table.

Sweet Potato Creme Brule

4 medium sweet potatoes
4 egg yolks
1 tsp butter
1 tsp vanilla
⅓ cup sugar
3 tbsp cornstarch
2 ½ cups of full fat milk

  1. Bake the Potatoes

    Line a baking sheet with a thick layer of salt. Stab your sweet potatoes with a fork from every side making 3 to 4 holes on each side. Place over the salt and bake at 220 degrees Celsius for 1 hour.
  2. Make the Custard

    In a saucepan, place milk, butter, and vanilla extract. Bring to a simmer over medium heat then remove it. Whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Then, set the saucepan back on low heat while gradually adding the egg mixture. Whisk constantly until it thickens for 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. You can skip this step and opt for ready-to-eat custard from the store. Or you can make it with custard powder mix.

  4. Assemble

    Once the sweet potatoes are fully baked, slice the top horizontally to create a bowl-like shape. Gently press down the insides to make space for the custard. Scoop 3 – 4 tablespoons of custard into each potato, adjusting based on its size. Sprinkle sugar over the top and use a kitchen torch to caramelize it until golden and crispy.
