Kuwait has lost one of its most influential figures, His Highness Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, who passed away on Monday at the age of 98. Sheikh Salem, a revered patriarch of the Al-Sabah family and the Chief of the Kuwait National Guard, dedicated his life to serving his country through numerous roles and charitable efforts.

A Life of Service and Leadership

Born in 1926 in Kuwait City’s Al-Sheoukh neighborhood, Sheikh Salem received his early education from local scholars before attending Al-Mubarkiya and Al-Ahmadiya schools. As Kuwait’s oil wealth began fueling development in the 1950s, Sheikh Salem played an important role in public service, overseeing various construction and modernization projects.

In 1959, Sheikh Salem led the construction council responsible for development projects and served as Chief of the Public Works Department. His leadership extended to the Municipal Council in the early 1960s and he was instrumental in Kuwait's constitutional assembly after the country gained independence in 1961. He was also Kuwait's first Minister of Public Works.

Establishing the National Guard

In 1967, Sheikh Salem was appointed Chief of the Kuwait National Guard, where he played a crucial role in maintaining the country’s security and stability. His tenure included significant contributions to national defense and collaboration with the police force.

Sheikh Salem's influence also spanned security and military sectors, including his roles in the higher defense council and the National Security Council. His dedication earned him the title of His Highness from the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Philanthropy and Legacy

Beyond his official duties, Sheikh Salem was known for his philanthropic efforts. In 2007, he donated KD 100 million to support citizens in need and families of martyrs. He also established the Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Informatics Award in 2000 to foster talent and raise awareness in the field of technology.

Sheikh Salem had a passion for nature and enjoyed desert adventures, hunting trips, and nautical activities. His passing marks the end of an era of service and dedication to Kuwait’s progress and well-being.
