Kuwait Launches New School Inside Correctional Facilities

Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior has introduced a new educational program inside the country’s correctional facilities as part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate prisoners through education. Launched under the "Support Them" initiative, the program is designed to give both male and female inmates the opportunity to pursue secondary and intermediate-level education while serving their sentences.

Partnerships to Boost Educational Opportunities

The program is a collaborative effort between the National Human Rights Commission, the Human Development Association, and the Ministry of Education. These partnerships aim to improve the educational infrastructure within correctional institutions, providing prisoners with formal education to prepare them for reintegration into society after release.

Skills to Prevent Recidivism

Brigadier Fahd Al Obaid, Assistant Undersecretary for Correctional Institutions and Enforcement of Sentences, highlighted that offering education equips inmates with essential skills to reduce the likelihood of returning to criminal behavior. The focus is on giving them the tools to lead productive lives once they are released.

Cultural and Moral Development

In addition to academic subjects, the newly opened school within the prison facilities includes religious teachings. Courses in Sharia sciences are available for the 2024-2025 academic year, aiming to strengthen the inmates' moral and cultural foundations.

The initiative not only addresses educational gaps but also promotes holistic rehabilitation, ensuring inmates leave with improved opportunities and better chances of successful societal reintegration.
