WHO: Corona’s Scenario Is Unlikely to Occur with Monkeypox
The World Health Organization reported that the monkeypox virus has been known since 1970, and it is a simple disease that does not cause severe symptoms, and what we are witnessing now is a simple evolution of the virus due to its spread in a place outside its homeland.
Sherine Al-Nusairi, medical officer of the Infection Risk Preparedness and Prevention Unit at the World Health Organization, said in a television statement, "This disease is moderate in Central and West Africa, and what we are witnessing is a change in the pattern of monkeypox, as it is spread in 18 countries so far," indicating that " Since May 23, 131 confirmed cases and 106 suspected cases have been reported.”
She pointed out that "what we are witnessing now is a viral evolution, and what is currently spreading is a simple type, and there are no deaths so far, and the complications are few," noting that "the monkeypox vaccine is of two types, the first is used for smallpox because it is from the same viral family, and it is 95% effective in preventing monkeypox and another approved vaccine.”
Al-Nusairi reported that “the corona scenario is unlikely to occur with monkeypox, due to the existence of a treatment and a vaccine and known ways to prevent it, while Corona was not known before and did not have a vaccine,” explaining that there are two strategies for the monkeypox vaccine, the first is by giving it to all people similar to the Corona vaccine which is not needed now, while the second is to vaccinate the most vulnerable people."
