The AFC Asian Cup was originally scheduled to take place in China between June 16th and July 16th, 2023. However, China announced in May of 2022 that they will not host the tournament due to the country’s Zero-COVID policy.
On October 17th, 2022, Asia’s football governing body announced Qatar as the host, beating out South Korea and Indonesia who made bids to host the tournament.
Due to the high summer temperatures in the Gulf region and Qatar's participation in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, it was decided the tournament will be postponed from summer 2023 to early 2024.
QFA also announced that Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani will head the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) responsible for arranging the logistics of the tournament.
This will be the third time that Qatar hosts the AFC Asian Cup after having hosted the 1988 and 2011 editions.
Qatar are the current title holders after winning the Asian Cup for the first time in 2019 after beating Japan 3-1 in the final.
The country is no stranger to hosting global sporting events having successfully organized the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November and December of 2022.
