DUBAI, 22nd September 2022: Sasan Nasernia will launch “Calligraphic Confluence” on 8th October at Mestaria Gallery.  Nasernia is a visual artist whose primary tool is the written word. Calligraphy is where he started, and it has continued to dominate all iterations and styles of his artwork in recent years. He uses calligraphy and letter forms as his building blocks and draws inspiration from his Persian heritage.

In “Calligraphic Confluence” Nasernia merges styles, themes and culture. He also pushes boundaries. His long-time fascination with the ancient practice of Islamic Calligram, as well as creating a contemporary interpretation of it, are the main driving forces behind “Calligraphic Confluence”.

The dialogue between his art and the mythical world is continuous and permanent. At first, the viewer is faced with a chaotic abstraction. In the second moment, figures of men, horses and elephants are then found. Canvases are populated with a vibrant colour palette, rendered in large swathes or splashes and often textured with dripped or splattered paint, so it’s only upon closer inspection that the elements of script and ornamentation are apparent, and the calligraphic nature of the work is revealed.

“In this collection the style of Islamic Calligram meets another core part of my heritage and influence; the art of Persian miniature paintings and its pinnacle the ‘Book of Kings’ or ‘Shahnameh.’ by Ferdowsi. The stories in this epic book tell endless wars between the forces of good and evil and how heroes and villains struggled in order to take the rein of power over the land and its people”, says Nasernia.

ABOUT SASSAN NASERNIA: Born and raised in Tehran, Nasernia spent his formative years living in a middle- class family with no obvious artistic role-models in his life. However, his father had a real interest in hand writing and planted the seed for his first understanding the aesthetics of calligraphy. Although his family wanted him to study engineering or architecture he was naturally drawn to art and went on to pursue a place at art school. He studied graphic design and fine art at Azad Art University in Tehran where he specialised particularly in digital typography. His personal interests are widely varied with a particular passion for music. He also enjoys reading history, religion, spirituality, global politics and philosophical ideas. Such intellectual discourses help him to reach a deeper understanding of the world around him and therefore play a massive role in shaping his personal philosophy of art.
