In a somber announcement that echoed through Kuwaiti state television, the royal court declared the passing of Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah at the age of 86.

The statement, filled with "great sadness and sorrow," expressed the nation's grief at the loss of its leader.

"With great sadness and sorrow, we — the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world — mourn the late His Highness the emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who passed away to his Lord today," Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al Sabah,  State Minister for Cabinet Affairs, read.

The news disrupted regular programming as state television transitioned to a broadcast of Koranic recitals in honor of the departed emir.

Sheikh Nawaf's demise follows a recent hospitalization in November for an unspecified emergency health problem, as reported by the official KUNA news agency.

Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf ascended to the role of Emir in September 2020, succeeding his half-brother Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who passed away at the age of 91.

Sheikh Nawaf's leadership was marked by the challenging task of navigating the Kuwaiti economy through the tumultuous waters of the 2020 oil price collapse.

The legacy of Sheikh Nawaf traces back to his early political career, which began at the age of 25 as the governor of Hawalli province. His dedication to public service continued until 1978, when he assumed the role of interior minister for the subsequent decade.

The late emir's brother, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, currently holds the position of crown prince at the age of 83.

As Kuwait mourns the loss of its leader, the nation stands at a crossroads, anticipating the future direction that the royal family will take in selecting a successor to guide the country through its next chapter.
