Al-Israa wal Miraaj, known as Prophet Muhammad's Ascension or the Night Journey, originally falls on Saturday, February 18th, which is already a rest day, and therefore the holiday was replaced by the new date to give Kuwaitis a long weekend. Work will resume on February 20th.
Sunday, February 26th, is also a public holiday marking Kuwait Liberation Day. This holiday marks the day when Kuwait was liberated from Iraqi occupation in 1991.
The National Day originally falls on Saturday, February 25th, which is why the following Monday will be given to compensate for the rest day. This holiday marks the day when Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah ascended to the throne in 1950.
Work will resume on February 28th after National Day and Liberation Day, after a long weekend for Kuwaitis.
The decision applies to "all ministries, government agencies, public bodies and institutions," Kuwait Civil Service Commission (CSC) said in a statement.
