Kuwait to Build $790 Million Medical City for Retirees
Massive healthcare project to provide advanced medical services and long-term care

Kuwait is moving forward with plans to build a state-of-the-art medical city dedicated to retirees, with an estimated cost of 243 million Kuwaiti dinars ($790 million). The initiative, led by the Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS), aims to enhance healthcare services for the aging population while incorporating international medical standards and boosting private sector involvement.
A Major Healthcare Hub in Amghara
Located in Amghara, the Kuwait Medical City will span 860,000 square meters and serve as a key medical hub. It will provide specialized treatments, long-term care, and rehabilitation services. The facility will house a 400-bed hospital, with plans to expand to 800 beds, along with five specialized centers focusing on cardiac and respiratory diseases, digestive disorders, urology and nephrology, and orthopedic care.
Infrastructure Progress and Development Timeline
The project has already reached key milestones, including the completion of a 132 KV power station, which has been handed over to the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy. Infrastructure design is finalized, and bids from contractors are currently being reviewed by project consultant KEO.
Long-Term Care and Additional Facilities
Beyond medical services, the complex will include outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. Green areas will also be incorporated to enhance the environment.
Strengthening Kuwait’s Medical Sector
The project is expected to reduce reliance on overseas treatments while strengthening local healthcare research and training programs. It will also create new job opportunities for Kuwaitis and serve as a training hub for medical students from Kuwait University.
Project Timeline and Budget Allocation
The development is progressing in phases, with 50 million dinars allocated in the 2025-2026 fiscal budget. Consulting firms will submit hospital design proposals in July 2025, with a final selection expected by November 2025 and contract signing in December 2025. The hospital design and medical equipment selection should be completed by September 2026, with construction starting in September 2027. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.
