Kuwait Starts Landmark Railway Project Backed by Saudi
Kuwait is taking a major step forward in its infrastructure development with the launch of a groundbreaking railway project. The project will not only enhance national connectivity but also deepen regional ties, with Saudi Arabia playing a crucial role in its success. Following the signing of 18 contracts for extensive road maintenance across Kuwait’s governorates, this railway initiative stands as one of the largest in the country's State Development Plan, known as "New Kuwait."
Boosting Economic Growth and Regional Integration
One of the key objectives of the railway project is to promote regional cooperation and create a more connected future for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). By linking Kuwait’s transportation infrastructure with Saudi Arabia, the project will significantly improve economic integration between the two nations, strengthening trade, logistics, and transport networks.
The project is part of the GCC's vision to create a seamless railway network that stretches across the region. Kuwait’s segment of this network will cover 111 kilometers, accounting for 5% of the overall GCC railway system. This connection will enhance transport efficiency, reduce travel times, and open up new business opportunities across the region.
A Collaborative Effort Between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia
In a notable collaboration between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, this railway project reflects the shared commitment of both nations to building a sustainable and interconnected infrastructure. The project has gained momentum thanks to important meetings between Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan, Kuwait’s Minister of Public Works, and Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics, M. Saleh Al-Jasser. These discussions have helped align both countries' goals and are driving the tender process forward.
Haifa Al-Jarallah, Vice President of the Public Authority for Roads & Transportation, revealed that the first phase of the railway project will involve the study and design of the Gulf Railway, with Kuwait serving as the northern station. The tender opening session has already taken place, and five international companies have qualified to manage the project, signaling strong global interest in the initiative.
Key Phases of the Project
The railway project will unfold in multiple stages. The first phase involves appointing a global consultant to provide advisory services. The second phase will focus on the qualification and selection of investors, while the third phase will kick off the implementation of the project. With the tendering process now in full swing, the project is poised for rapid progress.
The railway project is expected to enhance Kuwait’s role as a regional logistics hub, linking the country’s seaports to the growing GCC rail network. This connection will not only streamline transport across the region but also support global logistics expansion, making Kuwait a vital player in international trade.
Moving Towards a Sustainable Future
Sustainability is a core element of the railway project. By adopting efficient and eco-friendly transport solutions, Kuwait is advancing its vision of becoming a global commercial and economic hub. The railway project is a key step toward realizing this vision, as it improves connectivity, enhances trade flows, and supports the development of a robust infrastructure that can handle the demands of the future.
As the project progresses, it promises to create new economic opportunities and foster stronger ties between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The railway will not only serve as a major transport corridor but will also drive economic growth, boost regional integration, and enhance Kuwait’s standing on the global stage.
With this historic railway project underway, Kuwait is reinforcing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and regional cooperation - paving the way for a brighter, more connected future.
