Kuwait Launches Awareness Campaign on Domestic Worker Rights

The Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) in Kuwait has rolled out an awareness campaign to highlight the rights and duties of domestic workers and their employers. The initiative emphasizes compliance with the Authority’s regulations to protect both sides and prevent exploitation.  

Employers are required to use the standard recruitment contract provided by PAM and avoid transferring workers to another employer without official approval. Unauthorized transfers during the six-month warranty period will void the warranty.  

Additionally, PAM advises employers to obtain notarized contracts or payment receipts only from licensed recruitment offices. Using informal channels, such as WhatsApp or Snapchat, to hire domestic workers is strictly discouraged.  

Rights of Domestic Workers  

Domestic workers have several protections under the law, including:  

- End-of-service benefits: Workers are entitled to gratuities equal to one month’s salary for each year of service, upon contract completion.  

- Timely payment of salaries: Employers must ensure wages are paid on time, with documentation through receipts or bank transfers.  

- Right to privacy: Workers are allowed to own a mobile phone and use it outside working hours.  

Employers are also reminded that domestic workers cannot be assigned tasks outside Kuwait without their consent. In case of employment disputes, the Department of Regulating the Recruitment of Labor must be notified for resolution or a legal transfer.
