Kuwait’s interior ministry has started deploying a new set of mobile smart cameras to monitor speeding and other road violations. The announcement was made during a press event for the 38th GCC Traffic Week, held under the slogan “Driving without a phone.”

What’s different about these cameras?

According to officials, the upgraded mobile cameras are battery-powered and can be positioned at various high-traffic locations. Their main goal is to improve road safety by identifying violations more efficiently—especially speeding.

Big drop in violations ahead of law change

The traffic department revealed that traffic offenses already dropped in early 2025 compared to the same period last year. Red-light violations went down by 55%, and speeding dropped by 43%—a sign that drivers may be adjusting ahead of new, tougher traffic laws set to take effect on April 22.

What happens from April 22?

Starting April 22, Kuwait will implement a new traffic law that introduces stricter penalties, including higher fines, jail time, or both depending on the severity of the offense. Authorities clarified that these penalties won’t be applied retroactively to past violations.

Maj. Gen. Yousef Al-Khaddah, undersecretary for traffic and operations, said the goal is to build a safer traffic environment—not to punish—but to ensure drivers follow the rules.
