On Sunday, Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy announced that power cuts may be necessary in some high-consumption areas to stabilize the country’s electrical system. This decision follows a disruption in gas supplies, which led to outages in several power generation units at the Subiya and West Doha power plants.
Affected Areas
The power disruptions have impacted 42 areas, including Rabia, Fahaheel, Mahboula, Salmiya, and many others. The ministry is actively working to manage the situation and minimize inconvenience for residents.
High Temperatures and Power Disruptions
Eng. Haitham Al-Ali, the acting Undersecretary of the ministry, explained that the gas supply disruption coincided with unusually high temperatures reaching 46.5 degrees Celsius, compared to 37.5 degrees Celsius this time last year. This extreme heat has exacerbated the strain on the power system.
Ministry’s Response and Public Guidance
The ministry is cutting power first to factories and farms, and then to some residential areas, to manage the load effectively. Residents are advised to follow the ministry’s updates on social media and to conserve electricity during peak hours from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The ministry will provide timely information about which areas will experience power cuts, allowing residents to prepare accordingly.
Efforts to Resolve the Situation
Al-Ali noted that the quality of gas has improved since Saturday, but some units remain out of service. The ministry is working hard to repair the affected units and restore normal operations within the next 24 hours. The public is urged to be patient as these efforts continue.
