In a historic ceremony at St James's Palace, King Charles pledged to follow the path of his late mother, as he was officially declared the new King of Britain, two days after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The proceedings of the Council were broadcast for the first time on television. Council members attended, including Prime Minister Liz Truss, all her predecessors, Charles' wife Camilla, and his eldest son, Crown Prince William.
The council tradition of declaring a king goes back decades, although Charles automatically became king on the queen's death.
In a speech after the ceremony, King Charles, 73, said that he is well aware of the great duties and responsibilities of the King and added that his late mother set an example of infinite love and dedication to service, promising to emulate her.
