A father from Kolkata took an ambulance 230 kilometers to Balasore in Odisha because he couldn't accept the fact that his son passed away in the Coromandel Express train tragedy last week.

Helaram Malik did not accept the news of the passing of his son Biswajit Malik, 24, at face value. He rescued him in the hospital and brought him back to Kolkata for additional medical care after visiting the makeshift mortuary site at Bahanaga High School.

The Coromandel Express, one of several trains involved in a tragic collision in the eastern Indian state of Odisha last Friday that left 275 people dead and over 1,000 injured, included Biswajit Malik, 24.

“We never gave up. We were not allowed to see the bodies ourselves. A little later, a commotion broke out when someone noticed a victim’s right hand shivering. Since we were right there, we happened to notice that this hand belonged to Biswajit, who was unconscious and injured badly,” the father said in an interview.

Bishwajit underwent two surgeries at the trauma care unit of SSKM Hospital here after suffering several bone fractures in each of his limbs.

"We are very happy but concerned about his legs and hands. Money doesn't matter to me, my son matters. I have found my son and bringing him back to Kolkata is most important," the father further added.
