His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah took the oath as Kuwait's new Emir on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at the National Assembly session, after the demise of his brother the late Emir Sheikh Nawaf.
HH Sheikh Mishal was sworn in before the parliament at 10:00 a.m. and will give a speech to the assembly and the nation.
HH Sheikh Mishal acquired the power as Emir after taking the constitutional oath under Article 60.
Who is the New Emir of Kuwait HH Sheikh Mishal?
Before becoming Kuwait's Crown Prince in 2020, HH Sheikh Mishal served as head of state security for thirteen years after joining the Interior Ministry in 1960.
He also served as the Deputy Chief of the National Guard since 2004.
HH Sheikh Mishal has been integral in building and strengthening Kuwait's security and defence apparatus.
Kuwait's Next Crown Prince
HH Sheikh Mishal has one year to nominate Kuwait's Crown Prince who must be approved by the parliament.
The Crown Prince is only elected after he receives a majority vote in the National Assembly.
If the nominated Crown Prince does not receive the majority vote, then HH Sheikh Mishal has to nominate three descendants of Sheikh Mubarak Al Sabah.
One of the three nominees will then be elected by majority vote in parliament.
