Ep. 9-10: Another Big Cliffhanger in 'When the Phone Rings'
After being left on a cliffhanger in the episode eight, the two new episodes of ‘When the Phone Rings’ featured various emotionally-charged moments.
Sa Eon survived the fire and is on the hunt for the real Sa Eon with various threats lurking around him and Hee Joo.
These two episodes featured some intense confrontations, which was a result of everything coming out in the open. Since these were two episodes before the last two episodes, they were packed with big revelations and nerve-wrecking confrontations. The execution of these scenes was good and heightened the intensity of the thriller aspect of the series. Now that everything is out in the open, it was interesting to watch how the characters dealt with these revelations.
The directors Park Sang-woo and Wi Deuk-gyu and writer Kim Ji-woon have done a good job of creating a romantic mystery thriller series. Although, viewers have been solely invested in Sa Eon and Hee Joo's love story, it would have been nothing without the mystery-thriller plotline that has shaped their romantic journey so far.
It is all the challenges and difficulties from the thriller plotline, which brought the main leads close to each other. The directors and writer have created the perfect mystery thriller subplot for this romance, which was intriguing with its mysteries and dangerous moments. It is not too complicated, complementing the romantic plot, instead of obstructing it.
Many things are unveiled about the kidnapper, who is the real Sa Eon, and the missing orphans case in these episodes. The actor who plays the kidnapper, Park Jae Yoon, had done an excellent job with playing this character with dangerous tendencies. Although, the character’s personality was mostly revealed through stories from the past, but Jae Yoon has perfectly portrayed the character traits of the kidnapper like his stammer, giving him an eerie quality.
Yoo Yeon Seok continued to impress as Sa Eon, especially in episode ten, when Sa Eon reveals to the world that Hee Joo is his wife. The actor is bare-faced and red-eyed, barely holding on as he requests the media and public to report any sighting of his lost wife. It is one of the many moments from the series that went viral on social media as Sa Eon continues to be the ideal husband material.

Episode 10 ended on yet another cliffhanger, viewers are expecting big things from the last the last two episodes. Everyone wants Sa Eon to find Hee Joo, but with episode ten’s ending, people believ that the drama has transformed into a k-trauma (sad ending for couples in romantic K-dramas). Nonetheless, Sa Eon promised Hee Joo “I’ll come find you” if he ever went missing. Now that she has gone missing, he better find her and “start fresh with [her]”.
