Christmas in Kuwait takes on a subdued tone this year, marked by the ongoing conflict in Gaza and a mourning period following the passing of Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Residents are adopting a low-key approach to the festivities, with celebrations noticeably quieter compared to previous years.
A Different Atmosphere
On Christmas Eve, the Catholic Church and National Evangelical Church in Kuwait were softly illuminated with decorative lights as worshippers gathered for mass and other activities. However, the atmosphere remained notably different this year.
Low-Profile Festivities
Vector Almeida, an Indian expatriate attending a service at Salmiya Catholic Church, revealed that the church opted for a low-profile approach. Unlike previous years, there were no musical events or competitions. Almeida emphasized the decision as a mark of respect for the current situation in Kuwait and around the world, particularly in light of the Gaza conflict.
Prayers for Peace
Roseline Cole, a Filipino expatriate, reflected on this year's Christmas celebration, noting that it is mask-free unlike the previous year during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the recent passing of Kuwait's Amir and the ongoing conflict in Gaza have cast a shadow over the festivities. Cole expressed, "We pray for peace and an end to wars."
Significance of the Occasion
For the Christian community in Kuwait, this Christmas holds deep significance. While the celebrations may be quieter, what matters most to them is offering prayers for Gaza and remembering the late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
