A ban on facial coverings, famously known as the 'burqa ban', came into effect on Wednesday, Jan. 1.

If the law is violated, the administrative fine of CHF 100 will be paid directly on-site. However, if the individuals refuse to pay this fine, they will be subject to the ordinary procedure with a fine of up to CHF 1,000 (about $1,143).

Switzerland joins five other European countries in imposing this ban, which includes France and Austria.

In March 2021, the anti-burqa initiative was approved by 51.2 percent of Swiss voters.

Exceptions to the law include face coverings for security, weather, or health. Face coverings will also be allowed for art, entertainment, and advertising.
