US President Joe Biden has sparked heated discussion after being photographed holding The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine, a book chronicling Israel’s contentious founding and occupation of Palestinian lands.
The image, captured during a Black Friday shopping spree in Nantucket, has reignited debate about Biden’s policies on the ongoing conflict.
The book, authored by Palestinian American historian Rashid Khalidi, portrays Israel’s establishment as a "settler-colonial conquest" and critiques longstanding U.S. policies toward the region. Khalidi, a Columbia University professor, draws on decades of research, archival materials, and personal accounts to argue that Palestinians have faced a relentless campaign to dispossess them of their homeland.
Social media lit up following the photo, with reactions ranging from shock to skepticism. Khalidi himself commented that the president’s purchase was “four years too late.”
Biden’s support for Israel during its ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has claimed over 44,000 lives, has drawn sharp criticism globally.
Known for describing himself as a "proud Zionist," Biden’s unwavering backing of Israel has led critics to dub him "Genocide Joe," particularly as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalates.
Khalidi’s 2020 work also examines U.S. media’s portrayal of the conflict, arguing that bias has often downplayed Palestinian struggles. The book’s sudden appearance in Biden’s hands has been interpreted by many as a hollow gesture amidst a crisis of historic proportions.
While the president’s intentions behind purchasing the book remain unclear, the incident has amplified scrutiny of his policies, with detractors calling for accountability amid rising civilian casualties in Gaza.
