The couple were married in 1995 and has three children: Khadija, Raheema, and Ameen.
Banu's lawyer released a statement to India Today that said, "After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship."
Banu has requested privacy during this period and her son Ameen also echoed her request on his Instagram story.
Hours after the award-winning singer had announced his divorce, Indian bassist Mohini Dey also announced her separation from her husband.
Dey wrote, "With a heavy heart, Mark and I announce that we have separated".
The closeness of the announcements led netizens to speculate about Dey's involvement in Rahman's split from his wife.
However, Rahman and Banu's lawyer has rejected these rumors while talking to Republic TV, emphasizing there is "no link at all" between the two announcements.
All parties have requested privacy during this difficult time.
