Chinese multinational technology company Alibaba launched its artificial intelligence reasoning model on Thursday, Mar. 7, boasting that the AI model's capabilities beat DeepSeek and OpenAI.

The news led Alibaba's Hong Kong-listed shares to close eight percent higher that day and helped boost Hang Seng’s China Enterprises Index.

Alibaba's AI model is called QwQ-32B, and the company claims that it surpasses OpenAI-o1-mini and DeepSeek-R1.

QwQ-32B is claimed to have a "qualitative leap in mathematics, coding, and general capabilities, with overall performance on par with DeepSeek R1".

The company claimed that its AI model has 32 billion parameters and is less than DeepSeek’s R1, which has 671 billion parameters.

Lesser parameters mean that the AI model is smaller and more efficient to train.

Alibaba first launched its ChatGPT-equivalent service, Tongyi Qianwen, in 2023.

In January this year, the company launched another model, Qwen 2.5 Max, which it claimed surpassed DeepSeek's V3 model in performance, which was released a few weeks before Tongyi Qianwen.

Recently, Alibaba revealed that it will invest $52.4 billion in its AI and cloud computing infrastructure.
