A Kuwaiti court has sentenced three Gulf nationals to 10 years in prison for forging Kuwaiti citizenship and illegally obtaining government salaries and perks totaling KD500,000 (approximately Dh5.97 million). According to local newspaper Al Qabas, the court also mandated that the defendants pay back KD1 million, double the illegally obtained benefits, to the state treasury.
The case highlights Kuwait’s intensified measures against citizenship fraud as the nation looks to safeguard its identity. By forging Kuwaiti citizenship documents, the defendants had falsely claimed to be children of Kuwaiti men, allowing them to access salaries and benefits intended only for nationals.
This verdict comes amid a broader crackdown in Kuwait, where authorities have taken action against individuals with dual citizenship or those who acquired Kuwaiti citizenship under false pretenses. Since March, hundreds of people have lost their Kuwaiti nationality due to such violations. Under Kuwaiti law, holding another nationality is prohibited, and authorities have enforced the law rigorously, targeting cases that threaten the integrity of Kuwait’s citizenship system.
Kuwait, with a population of around 4.9 million - primarily expatriates - continues to work toward strengthening its national identity by addressing cases of dual citizenship and fraud.
