A Deadly Earthquake Hit Turkey and Syria with Magnitude of 7.8

A Deadly Earthquake Hit Turkey and Syria with Magnitude of 7.8A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Southeast Turkey and Northern Syria in the early hours of Monday morning leaving at least 912 in Turkey dead and killing 467 people in Syria. The earthquake is one of the most powerful quakes in the region with at least 5,383 people wounded in Turkey and Syria. Hundreds of people have been killed as they slept.

Slight shakiness is also felt across Lebanon and Cyprus.

Many of those who survived are trapped under the buildings may not be rescued for days. The death toll is expected to rise as emergency services work their way through thousands of damaged buildings.

The Syrian rescue group known as the White Helmets says it has counted 147 deaths in opposition-controlled areas of northwestern Syria.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles).

Turkish President Erdogan stated that rescue teams were immediately spread to different areas which got hugely impacted by the earthquake.

"Our Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Health, AFAD, provincial governorships, and all other institutions started their work rapidly.” President Erdogan said

The government of Turkey issued a level-4 alarm, which includes a call for international aid. The evacuations are expected to begin tomorrow.

 

"We are also coordinating our work after the earthquake. We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage, and we continue our work," he added.
